Benefits of Volunteering
I
have volunteered for many years, even when I was working full time. There are many benefits to volunteering.
If you want to develop work related skills, volunteering will help you greatly. Here are some ideas of skills you can develop through volunteer work: oral and written communication skills, ability to follow instructions, ability to work as a team member, ability to work independently, computer skills (word processing, internet, spreadsheets,
database management, etc). There are many others skills but this will give you some ideas.
In addition to developing important skills you get to see what the world of work is really like.
You will see how people go about doing their jobs on a day to day basis. This kind of experience will help
you as you consider what careers you might pursue.
Volunteering will give you work experience to build on your resume or CV.
You will develop references who can attest to your abilities.
In addition, being in the workplace the employer has a chance to observe you at work.
The employer can observe your work habits: are you punctual, hard working, good with taking instruction,
follow through with assignments? Also the employer can see how well you are developing your skills.
If a job opens, you might be considered since the employer knows you and how well you fit in and how well you work.
Good luck with your volunteer experiences!
