Requirements for doctoral studies
Tbilisi State University (TSU) is a leading research and scientific institution in Georgia offering wide variety of PhD programs in the fields of Humanities, Social and Political Sciences, Natural and Exact Sciences, Law and Medicine.
A doctoral program lasts for 3 years (6 semesters) and a doctoral student has to accumulate 180 ECTS. The requirements for PhD students include the completion of the courses and a dissertation in before the termination of 3 year term. The dissertation may consist of a number of publications and articles authored by a candidate. The dissertation council of the faculty will decide whether the work by the PhD student complies with requirements of the university. After a successful defense of the dissertation, the candidate will be awarded a Degree of Philosophy (PhD).
International students and scholars from all disciplines are encouraged to apply for doctoral programs taught at TSU.
Recognition of foreign degrees and credits
The programs and credits from foreign universities will be recognized only if they are congruent with Georgian higher education organizations and study programs.
The degrees issued abroad will be recognized as equivalent with Georgian documentation and acknowledged as authentic according to the rules and norms determined by the Georgian Ministry of Education and Science.
Individual study and research plans
1. The first year PhD student and his or her supervisor should develop an individual plan for PhD studies covering the entire period of the student’s studies within the framework of the university (or the faculty) scheme. The plan is dependent upon the theme of the dissertation, the specifics of the program and field of study, academic background of the student, academic potential and material-technical base of the faculty. Upon completion of the study component as outlined in the individual study plan, the student should fill out a special form (N 1) and with additional documentation should submit it to the faculty administration. The faculty administration will notify the dissertation council regarding the student’s progress.
2. In the first year of the studies, the PhD student will develop a research plan with his/her supervisor in the beginning of study year. The student should submit the research plan along with a special form (N2) to the faculty administration.
Second, third and fourth year students should, together with their supervisor(s), draw up a detailed study and research plan for the beginning study year. The student should upload his or her individual plan and any annexes to that plan in electronic form to the Study Information System and take a paper copy to his or her institute or faculty.
